"Death by chocolate"

Well its Easter time and that means chocolates!

.… However remember to keep your pets away from chocolate as it can kill them.  We’ve all heard the expression ‘DEATH BY CHOCOLATE’, but it can actually happen to pets.

Chocolate poisoning is due to an overdose of theobromine.  Theobromine is found in chocolate, tea, cola beverages and some other foods. The amount of Theobromine is especially high in dark chocolate or unsweetened baker's chocolate.

Unfortunately serious poisoning can easily occur in dogs, as they metabolise theobromine much more slowly than humans, and can easily consume enough chocolate to cause chocolate poisoning.  In some cases it may even be fatal. The toxic dose for cats is even less than it is for dogs, however cats are less prone to eating chocolate since they are unable to taste sweetness.

The first signs of chocolate poisoning are nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and increased urination. These signs can progress to cardiac arrhythmias, seizures, internal bleeding, heart attacks and eventually death.

Medical treatment should be performed as soon as possible by your veterinarian and involves inducing vomiting if the chocolate was recently consumed and also medication to decrease the side effects from the theobromine.

If you accidently forget to hide the chocolate and your dog unluckily finds it, make sure to contact the clinic as soon as possible so staff can advise you on what to do.  In many cases if caught early enough it may just involve emptying the pet’s stomach by inducing vomiting, whereas delayed management may mean extensive treatment for your pet.
